Would Your Dog Swipe Right? What Your Pup Really Thinks About You

We spend a lot of time trying to figure out our dogs. We Google training tips, buy the latest toys, and sometimes even consult behaviourists to decode their every move. But have you ever stopped and flipped the perspective?

What if your dog had their own version of a dating app for humans? Would they swipe right on you? Would they proudly say, “That’s my person!” or quietly mutter, “She’s nice, but… inconsistent with the treats…”

This isn’t about guilt or judgement. It’s about connection. Dogs don’t rate us on our salaries or our social media game, they rate us on how we make them feel. And they’re far more honest about it than we are.

Consistency over perfection

Here’s the thing: dogs don’t need a perfect trainer. They need a consistent one. Your dog isn’t secretly keeping score of how many times you’ve slipped on your training plan. What they are paying attention to is whether your words match your actions.

Do you say “come” and then chase them around the garden when they don’t? Do you allow cuddles on the sofa one day and scold them for it the next? That inconsistency is like a flashing neon sign saying: “The rules change depending on the mood today!”

💡 Thought to chew on: Is your dog confident because of your leadership, or in spite of it?

Time spent, not things bought

We’re all guilty of it, buying the “next best thing” for our dogs. The deluxe bed. The puzzle toy. That oddly expensive harness. But here’s the secret: your dog doesn’t measure your love in purchases. They measure it in moments.

A ten-minute sniffy walk, a quiet sit together in the garden, or even a goofy game of tug-of-war does more for their happiness than the fanciest accessory.

💡 Quick check: Are you giving your dog your time, or just your budget?

3. Calm energy wins every time

Your dog couldn’t care less about your job title or whether you hit inbox zero. But they care deeply about the energy you bring into their world. Dogs are experts at reading body language and emotional states, which means if you’re stressed and chaotic, they’re picking up every bit of it.

An anxious human often equals an anxious dog. A calm, grounded human gives their dog permission to relax and trust.

💡 Ask yourself: What lesson is your dog learning from your energy every single day?

4. Fun is non-negotiable

Dogs are joy on four legs. But life gets busy, and somewhere between commutes and emails, playtime gets downgraded to a five-minute afterthought. Here’s the problem: fun isn’t optional for your dog. It’s their reset button, their way of bonding with you, and their proof that you’re their safe AND happy place.

When was the last time you were silly with your dog? No training agenda, no expectations, just pure, goofy, tail-wagging fun?

💡 Real talk: Does your dog see you as the source of calm AND the source of joy?

The Big Question:

If your dog had to choose their human all over again, would they pick you? Not because you feed them or walk them, but because of the way you make them feel.

At Homely Petz, we know that training isn’t just about shaping your dog, it’s about shaping yourself into the human they need. Sometimes the best way to “fix” a dog is to look in the mirror and ask:
