What a fun day supporting the Ras al Khaimah Animal Welfare Centre Pool Party. A day in in aid of creating awareness of the plight of so many animals including cats and dogs abandoned and found in the United Arab Emirates. A dog friendly pool, pet vendors and stalls. We organised the dog agility area and The Dogzbody (Neil Anderson) our Master Dog Trainer did a talk and short demonstration on the various prey drives a dog has. We had a lot of fun, a big thumbs up to the organisers of the event it was a total success and we can't wait to be at the next one :)

Around the world the epidemic of dog dumping is getting wild! Years ago it used to be stray or mixed breed dogs getting abandoned but not now. Both mixed breeds and pure bred dogs are being dumped, abandoned and moved on over and over again. The dog rescue centres are full and struggling to cope and dogs are simply being chucked out due to humans not thinking through their circumstances or not being able to cope with changed circumstances. This has got to stop. Where can it stop? It can start with thinking through your own circumstances prior to getting a dog, whether you are looking to adopt or buy, think about it, think about it again and then some more. Do you really want a dog in your life, why do you want to get a dog, is it to actually care for and nurture a dog for its entire life or a quick fix to appease your current life status? Don't make the selfish decision to get a dog because you are emotionally drained of life, or getting a dog to please the kids or get a dog to be a friend to your other dog who has behaviour problems. Think very carefully why do I want a dog and can I keep one for it's entire life. Don't be a dumping dog statistic and make the right decision for the dog, not for you! You know it makes sense!

Ticks are everywhere! Eeek! Yes they are around the world and some simple preventative measures can protect your dog, here in the United Arab Emirates we also get ticks, they are the camel tick, so like all other dog owners we need to protect our dogs, prevention is better than cure. Ticks are small parasitic arachnids that feed on the blood of mammals, birds, and sometimes reptiles and amphibians. They can transmit serious diseases to pets and humans. Preventing ticks on your dog involves using tick prevention products like tablets or spot-on treatments, tick collars, and oral medications as recommended by your vet. Regularly check your dog for ticks after walks, especially if you’ve been in sandy, wooded or grassy areas. Maintain your garden by keeping the lawn mowed, removing leaf litter, and creating a tick-free zone with wood chips or gravel, research what type of environment ticks live in wherever you live, this can also help prevent them breeding in your back yard or garden. During walks, stick to trails and avoid tall grasses and bushy areas. Regular brushing also helps in spotting ticks early before they attach. Telling someone directly that your dog is anxious allows for clearer communication and understanding of your dog's needs, and why is that? Verbally telling someone about your dog's anxiety provides specific details about their behaviour, triggers, and needs. This helps others around you understand how to interact with your dog appropriately and can prevent misunderstandings. Every dog is unique, and their anxiety may be expressed differently. By verbally informing others about your dog's anxiety you're literally telling them face to face or at least from a distance that you and your dog need space. Don't wait until it is too late, don't rely on the Anxiety vest to tell them, this can be used as a backup if you're distracted. You must claim and own the space around your dog thus letting them know that you care about their feelings and are able to keep them safe. While jackets or other visual indicators can provide some information about a dog's anxiety, verbal communication offers a more direct route to making sure someone approaching knows to give your dog space and hopefully prevent unwanted reactivity and even more anxiety which you and your dog don't need. It's simply really!
