If Dogs Could Review Us on Google…

We spend a lot of time wondering what our dogs think of us.
Are we doing it right? Are we confusing them? Do they actually understand what we’re asking?
Now imagine this for a moment…what if dogs could leave Google reviews about the humans they live with?
Here’s what we suspect some of those reviews might look like, and what they quietly tell us about our dogs’ experience of the world.

This is more common than people realise. Dogs are incredibly sensitive to tension, especially on the lead. Tight grips, shallow breathing, rushed movements… dogs feel it all. Over time, they can start associating walks not with freedom, but with stress.
Translation: Calm travels down the lead just as easily as tension does.

Dogs don’t struggle with learning, they struggle with inconsistency. When cues change, rules shift, or expectations depend on mood, dogs are left guessing. Treats help soften the confusion, but clarity builds confidence.
Translation: Consistency creates routine that dogs love and respond to better.

Dogs communicate discomfort subtly long before they escalate it. When those signals are missed (or misunderstood), dogs may feel the need to shout instead, by barking, snapping, or avoidance.
Translation: Behaviour is communication, not misbehaviour. Train your dog with cues and markers and build that Platform of Communication.
Dog ownership doesn’t come with a manual, and social media doesn’t always help. We love our dogs deeply, but love alone doesn’t always translate into understanding.
And that’s okay.

So… how do you improve your rating with your dog?
Not by being perfect. Not by training harder. Not by copying what worked for someone else’s dog.
But by:
Slowing down.
Becoming more aware of your own emotions.
Listening to what your dog is actually telling you.
Building communication, not control through fair and balanced training.
At Homely Petz, we see this every day. When humans change how they show up, calmer, clearer, more consistent, dogs don’t just behave differently… they feel differently and that is a positive result not only for your dog but also for you too.
And if dogs could leave Google reviews?
We think most of them would happily update theirs, when things change for the better for them.
